A New Sports Centre at St Mary’s Christian Brother’s Grammar School

Investing in the Future of St Mary’s

Welcome to our public consultation website for the proposed development of a new Sports Centre at St Mary’s CBGS, Glen Road, Belfast.

Investing in the Future of St Mary’s CBGS

St Mary’s CBGS is bringing forward proposals for a purpose-built Sports Centre that would provide modern facilities for physical education, sport, and wellbeing activities.

The proposed Sports Centre would be constructed on part of the existing all-weather playing field, adjacent to the Edmund Rice Building, within the school grounds.

The proposed Sports Centre forms part of the school’s long-term masterplan to improve facilities for its over 1,100 pupils and staff.

About the School

Founded in 1866, St Mary’s Christian Brothers Grammar School is a voluntary grammar school that currently educates over 1,100 boys. It relocated to its current site on Glen Road in 1968 and has since grown to meet the needs of the local community. The school is committed to continual improvement of its facilities, with the proposed Sports Centre representing the next major step in that journey.

Next Steps

This pre-application community consultation has been developed to meaningfully engage with pupils, parents, staff, local residents, and all interested parties as part of the Pre-Application Community Consultation (PACC) process.

Following the completion of the consultation period, all feedback received will be carefully reviewed and considered. The design team may make refinements to the proposals in response to the comments received.

A full planning application for the proposed Sports Centre will then be submitted to Belfast City Council. The application will be accompanied by a Pre-Application Community Consultation Report summarising all feedback and how it has informed the proposals.

The Council will consider the application in full before making a decision. Subject to planning approval, it is anticipated that work on the new Sports Centre will commence at pace.

The closing date to provide your feedback on the proposals is Friday 5th Septmeber 2025 at 5pm.
